My Heart Aches And Bleeds Over The Cases Of Kariyai Daukoru And Ebilatei Amabebe

WISDOM ONIEKPAR IKULI

Where is the place of Compassion?

Reading through the stories of these two young men makes my heart bleed.

Bright and very promising future and destinies of the young men are already threatened.

Why the imprisonment of Kariyai Daukoru at Kuje prison?

I don’t think it is the best way to show affluence and financial status in society. It will not also solve the prevalent situation.

It is sad and quite unfortunate that society care less about history that individuals make otherwise, humans particularly the privileged elites would have been mindful of their actions and inaction.

As one of the mirrors and conscience of society, posterity will never forgive me if I remain silent for obvious reasons even though I have been working underground to see that issues are resolved amicably instead of the sad dimension things have taken.

I feel sad for young people who applaud what is happening to these two young men. Today is their turn, nobody knows the next victim.

It is better for me to express my feelings and incur the wrath of the gods than to be a prisoner to my conscience which is the worst form of imprisonment.

When most Germans were quiet in the midst of Adolf Hitler’s atrocities, a pastor, Martins Niemöller spoke out without fear of death in what is now known as the famous poem and quote:

First they came for the Socialists,
And I did not speak out—
because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists,
And I did not speak out—
because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
And I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—
And there was no one left to speak for Me.

I am very mindful of the economic capital some persons will make with my name for speaking the truth, but I wish them the best. It is better to speak against injustice than to be mute for whatever considerations.

Less than 1% of the present crop of wealthy Bayelsans were born with gold, silver or bronze spoons, the rest were born in abject poverty by poor parents who were largely poor farmers and fisher men and women.

Most of them gained their present affluence through hardwork or political patronage and favoritism.

If they could conquer their circumstances to change their stories, the present crop of young people can also attain the same heights and even go greater and higher.

Kings and kingdoms rise and fall except our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God that shall live and reign forever.

Shame on leaders who are quiet in the midst of prevalent injustice.
