Professor Princewill Rewhuamwhu Chike: 10th Vice-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Professor Princewill Chike is a distinguished medical doctor, Professor of Cardiovascular and Tissue Perfusion Physiology, and former Honourable Commissioner for Health, Rivers State.

 

*Early Life and Education*
Born on the 28th of June, 1964, in Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria, Professor Chike hails from Eligbam village in Rumueme Kingdom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He began his education at St. John’s State School, Rumueme, from 1971 to 1976. He proceeded to Birabi Memorial Grammar School, BMGS, Bori, in present-day Khana LGA from 1976 to 1981, and later attended County Grammar School, CGS, Ikwerre/Etche between 1981 and 1982.

In pursuit of his dream in medicine, he gained admission into the prestigious University of Port Harcourt in 1983. An accomplished sportsman, he represented UNIPORT in four Nigeria Universities Games, NUGA, winning three medals — one bronze and two silver — in squash.

His academic journey at UNIPORT saw him earn:
– *B.Med.Sc.* in Human Physiology, 1987
– *MBBS*, 1991
– *M.Sc.* in Immunopharmacology, 2000
– *MD* in Cardiovascular Physiology/Medicine, 2007

*Academic Career and Service*
A committed academician and medical practitioner, Professor Chike has devoted his life to teaching, research, medical practice, and service to humanity.

Between June 1992 and August 2010, he served in various capacities at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital as House Officer, Registrar, and Honorary Tutor in the Department of Internal Medicine. He was also Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the School of Laboratory Technological Sciences, UNIPORT.

He has lectured as Visiting Scholar in Human Physiology at the Colleges of Medicine of Imo State University, Niger Delta University, Bayelsa, Madonna University, Elele, and others. He also served as External Examiner to the Universities of Calabar, Uyo, Benin, Lagos, Ibadan, Ife, Jos, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

As a cardiovascular physiologist, his research spans endocrine, cardiovascular, neuro, blood, renal/respiratory, and ageing physiology. He has made remarkable strides in these areas and has become a reference point in medical scholarship.

Professor Chike has supervised over 350 http://B.Sc. Human Physiology students, 50 http://M.Sc. students, and 20 PhD/MD candidates. He has also assessed over 17 professorial candidates from universities across Nigeria.

*Professional Impact*
He has presented numerous research papers at conferences within and outside Nigeria. His professional affiliations include the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Neuroscience Society of Nigeria, Physiological Society of Nigeria, Nigerian Environmental Society, and West African Society of Pharmacology.

The Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, ANPMP, and other bodies have benefited from his forthrightness. In recognition of his integrity, the College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, honoured him with the _Champion of Ethics and Values_ award.

By July 2012, his contributions to medical research and teaching earned him the academic rank of Professor at his alma mater, the University of Port Harcourt.

Today, as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Princewill Rewhuamwhu Chike brings to the office decades of experience in academia, healthcare, public service, and leadership, with a commitment to advancing excellence, research, and service to humanity.
