The Benue chapter of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association of Nigeria (USGEAAN) on Wednesday led a coalition of youth organisations in a solidarity walk in Makurdi to mark International Youth Day.
The walk was held under the global theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” Participants gathered at the High Level Underpass and marched to the Benue State Government House.
Representatives from youth-focused groups joined to promote participation, inclusion, peace building and climate action.
Dr. Akpem Terese Shadrach, Benue State Coordinator of USGEAAN, commended the organisations for turning out. He urged young people to unite behind a shared agenda to expand opportunities in the state.
“The need to rally together in pushing a youth agenda that advances collective development and increased opportunities for young people in the state cannot be overemphasised,” Shadrach said.
After the walk, participants joined other activities at IBB Square in Makurdi.
Organisers said the week-long programme will end on Saturday with a youth conference at the Centre for Food Technology Research, CEFTER, in GRA, Makurdi. The conference is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Expected participants include young leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, business leaders, civil society groups, government officials and development partners.
Two panel sessions will address economic participation, leadership and access to opportunities at local, national and international levels.
Organisers also plan to launch a “Benue Youth Charter” tagged “The Benue Dream.” The document is expected to outline the aspirations and priorities of young people in the state and serve as a framework for engagement on youth development.
Participation in the conference is open to young people and stakeholders across Benue.
Groups present at Wednesday’s activities included Go-Green, Hub 17, YALI Benue Chapter and other youth-focused organisations.
International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12 to spotlight issues affecting young people and encourage their involvement in social, economic and political development.
