A clean and healthy environment remains the foundation of human survival, preventive healthcare, and overall well-being. Proper waste management helps prevent the spread of diseases, ensures cleaner air and water, and contributes to improved mental health, productivity, and a healthier society.Lagos State, widely known as the “Centre of Excellence,” is Nigeria’s economic and financial hub, celebrated for its vibrant culture, entrepreneurial spirit, and status as Africa’s largest megacity. However, the state is currently facing significant waste management challenges, including overflowing illegal dumpsites, refuse accumulation on road medians, blocked drainages, and overstretched landfill facilities.

With Lagos generating over 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, concerns continue to grow over the environmental and public health implications of unmanaged refuse across the state.

The Kukuruku Community Media has therefore, called on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to intensify efforts aimed at improving waste collection and disposal across the state.

The group noted that the increasing volume of refuse left uncollected on roadsides, in drainages, and at illegal dumpsites poses serious health and environmental risks to residents.

According to the media group, there is a need for stronger collaboration between the Lagos State Government and local government authorities to ensure the prompt evacuation of waste from communities across Lagos.

The group further urged the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to play a more active role in the direct evacuation of refuse from streets and public spaces, rather than relying predominantly on the services of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

They emphasized that PSP operators should complement the efforts of LAWMA, while LAWMA continues to provide strong oversight, support, and direct intervention where necessary to ensure efficiency in waste management.

Kukuruku Community Media also called on Governor Sanwo-Olu to address the issue of landfill and dumpsite management across the state.

The group noted that waste management has the potential to become a major revenue-generating sector through recycling, waste-to-energy initiatives, and other sustainable environmental projects.

The media organization urged the Governor to invest further in the waste management sector, stressing that such investments would not only improve environmental sanitation but also enhance public health, create jobs, and restore Lagos’ reputation as one of Africa’s cleanest and most organized megacities.

“A cleaner Lagos is a healthier Lagos. Effective waste management is essential for environmental sustainability, economic growth, and the well-being of all residents,” the group stated.
