For more than a decade, Jim Beabubari Marshall’s workplace was an elevator at the headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission in Port Harcourt.
Every working day, he quietly ferried staff and visitors between floors, greeting them with courtesy as he operated the lift. To many, he was simply the lift operator. Few knew that behind the uniform was a guy whose greatest ambition was to become a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Today, that dream has become reality. Marshall, an indigene of Bayelsa State, was among the successful candidates called to the Nigerian Bar in Abuja, a few days ago, completing a remarkable journey defined by perseverance, sacrifice and an unwavering faith in the power of education.
His inspiring story was shared by the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Chiedu Ebie, Esq., who attended the Call to Bar ceremony and reflected on the extraordinary path that brought Marshall to the legal profession. “Jim’s story is one of resilience, self-belief, and the quiet triumph of determination over adversity,” Ebie wrote on his Facebook page.

According to him, Marshall worked as a contract lift operator with the NDDC for over a decade while pursuing his academic ambitions against overwhelming odds. “Jim, an indigene of Bayelsa State, has worked as a lift operator contract staff with the NDDC for over a decade. During this time, he self-sponsored his education and earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt,” Ebie recalled.
For many, earning a law degree would have marked the end of the struggle. For Marshall, however, it was only another hurdle. Despite obtaining his LL.B., financial hardship prevented him from enrolling at the Nigerian Law School, leaving his dream of becoming a lawyer painfully out of reach. As Ebie put it, “Financial constraints and the vicissitudes of life… prevented him from proceeding to the Nigerian Law School.”
The turning point came unexpectedly in 2024. Ebie recounted that while riding the lift to the boardroom one day, he struck up a conversation with the young man operating it, a conversation that would transform Marshall’s future. “One day in 2024, on my way up to the boardroom in the lift he operated, I engaged him in conversation, and that was when I discovered he was a self-sponsored law graduate without the means to attend Law School,” he said.
Determined that such talent should not go to waste, Ebie sought help. With the support of former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegeh, Marshall secured admission to the Nigerian Law School’s Port Harcourt Campus.
Ebie explained how the intervention unfolded. “With the support of the former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Augustine Alegeh, SAN, Jim was admitted to the Nigerian Law School’s Port Harcourt campus. We provided him with the necessary support to meet the registration requirements, enabling him to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”
Marshall justified the confidence reposed in him. Months later, he successfully completed his studies and passed the Bar Final Examinations. Recalling the moment, Ebie wrote: “On the 18th of April, 2026, I received a message from Jim informing me that he had passed the Bar Final Examinations.”
That message marked the culmination of years of determination and the beginning of a new chapter. At the Call to Bar ceremony in Abuja, Marshall officially joined the legal profession, a profession he had dreamed of entering while quietly operating a lift.
His transformation will also extend to his career at the NDDC. “Today, Jim is a professional colleague as a lawyer and will be offered full-time employment, this time not as a lift operator but as a full-fledged lawyer,” Ebie announced. Congratulating the new lawyer, the NDDC chairman paid tribute to Marshall’s persistence and belief in himself.
“Congratulations, Jim Beabubari Marshall, on believing in yourself and chasing your dreams. I wish you well in your chosen career and welcome you to the noble profession of law.”
Marshall’s journey is more than a personal success story. It is a powerful reminder that determination can outlast adversity, that opportunity can change the course of a life, and that education remains one of the most reliable pathways to personal transformation. From operating a lift to joining the ranks of Nigeria’s legal profession, Jim Beabubari Marshall has shown that dreams delayed are not necessarily dreams denied.
