Spanish Firm Arrives Anambra As AfDB Urban Development Programme Implementation Begins

A Spanish consulting team has arrived in Awka, marking the official commencement of the African Development Bank-supported African Cities Programme in Anambra State.
The Acciona delegation, led by Deputy Project Leader, Elisa Maceratini, has begun stakeholder engagements and technical assessments to prepare the state capital for large-scale infrastructure investments.
Addressing the partners, ACTDA Managing Director Dr. Ossy Onuko prioritized the construction of 10,000 low-cost housing units to address residents’ accommodation needs. Other priority projects include a modern mass transit scheme, sustainable power solutions, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and improved water supply infrastructure.
The team has paid courtesy visits to the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, both of whom have endorsed the priority projects. Community engagement is also underway, with a meeting with the President-General of Awka, Chief Fred Chinwuba.
Acciona emerged as technical partner following a competitive procurement process by the AfDB and will now conduct a comprehensive city diagnostic study and prepare a City Action Plan to position Awka as a modern, sustainable, and investment-ready capital in line with the Solution government.
