Former Rivers State Deputy Governor and current lawmaker at the National Assembly, Senator Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has strongly rejected her disqualification by the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee for the senatorial race, describing the decision as ill-timed and inconsistent with the party’s push for greater female inclusion in politics.
In a statement reacting to the screening outcome, Senator Banigo expressed disappointment, stressing that the APC cannot afford to sideline experienced female leaders at a critical moment when the nation is advocating for more women in leadership positions.
“In a time when we are seeking for female inclusion, our party can’t afford to disqualify experienced women,” Banigo declared.
The outspoken politician, who has served Rivers State with distinction in various capacities including as Deputy Governor and Senator, argued that her wealth of experience should be seen as an asset to the party rather than a reason for exclusion.
Political observers note that Banigo’s disqualification has sparked debate within APC circles in Rivers State, with some party members calling for a review of the screening exercise to ensure fairness and inclusivity. Supporters of the former senator describe her as a seasoned administrator and bridge-builder whose continued participation would strengthen the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
As at press time, the APC leadership in the state is yet to issue an official response to Banigo’s rejection of the screening verdict. However, sources close to the senator indicate she remains committed to her political aspirations and is exploring all legitimate avenues to contest the senatorial seat.
Banigo’s bold stance is being viewed by many as a significant voice for women’s representation in Nigerian politics, especially within the opposition party framework in Rivers State.
