When renowned human rights lawyer, activist and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, declared on Thursday, 28th May, 2026, that Governor Alex Otti’s leadership should serve as a reference point for governance in Nigeria, he was acknowledging what many now describe as the rebirth of Abia State.

Speaking at the Abia Anniversary Lecture held at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube, Umuahia, Prof. Odinkalu noted that Governor Otti restored legitimacy, dignity, hope and public trust in governance after years of what he described as “desgobierno” meaning “ungovernment.”

According to him, for over two decades, Abians witnessed a steady collapse of public institutions, poor infrastructure, insecurity and declining confidence in government. However, within three years, Governor Otti has changed the narrative through purposeful leadership, strategic reforms and people-oriented governance.

Today, the transformation is visible across the State. Critical roads in Aba and Umuahia are being reconstructed and modernised, commercial activities are returning, security has improved and public infrastructure is receiving renewed attention. The commissioning of projects such as the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal and the flag-off of the Aba Ring Road project further demonstrate the administration’s commitment to infrastructural renewal and economic expansion.

Beyond infrastructure, Prof. Odinkalu emphasised that the real achievement of the Otti administration lies in restoring confidence in governance and improving the quality of life of ordinary citizens. Regular payment of salaries and pensions, reforms in healthcare and education, investments in security and the deliberate focus on human capital development have strengthened public trust and renewed hope among the people.

Governor Otti’s leadership style has also distinguished his administration. His emphasis on competence, accountability, transparency and strategic planning has attracted professionals and technocrats into governance, while his administration’s policies continue to position Abia as a model of effective leadership and reform-driven governance in Nigeria.

The Governor himself reaffirmed during the lecture that governance must be centered on “the dignity of man,” stressing that development should not only be measured by physical projects but by the positive impact on human lives.

Indeed, the ongoing transformation in Abia State reflects a government intentionally rebuilding institutions, restoring public confidence and creating an environment where citizens can once again believe in governance.

That explains why Prof. Chidi Odinkalu believes that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has become a worthy example of visionary leadership, purposeful governance and sustainable development in Nigeria.
