Nigeria’s Super Eagles To Face Portugal In Friendly Match In Leiria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Portugal’s national team are scheduled to play an international friendly on Wednesday at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, according to team announcements.

The match kicks off at 8:45 p.m. local time in Portugal, which is the same time in Nigeria.

Nigeria head coach, Éric Chelle, has been in charge for 15 months, according to team records. In that period, the Super Eagles have played 24 matches, with one loss in regulation time — a December 2025 friendly against Egypt in Cairo, played with what team officials described as an understrength squad.

Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, has guided his side through a four-match unbeaten run, team records show. That stretch includes wins against the USA and Chile and a draw with Mexico. Portugal’s last defeat was a 2-0 loss to the Republic of Ireland seven months ago.

Portugal will play DR Congo in its opening Group K match at the FIFA World Cup following Wednesday’s friendly, according to the team’s schedule.

The Portuguese squad includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota, Rúben Dias, Nélson Semedo, Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Neves, João Félix, Gonçalo Guedes and Rafael Leão, according to the Portuguese Football Federation.

In Portugal’s 2-1 win over Chile on Saturday at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, Bruno Fernandes scored and provided an assist for Gonçalo Guedes, match reports show.

Nigeria will be without Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, according to team officials. Bright Osayi-Samuel is also unavailable. Centre-back Igoh Ogbu left camp on Tuesday due to injury.

Samuel Chukwueze is available after missing Nigeria’s match against Poland, while Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Akor Adams, Terem Moffi and Philip Otele are in the squad, the Nigeria Football Federation said.

Midfielder Alexander Iwobi is set to earn his 100th senior cap, according to the NFF. Captain Wilfred Ndidi is available alongside Frank Onyeka, Tochukwu Nnadi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Raphael Onyedika and Christian Akpan.

In defence, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Emmanuel Fernandez are available. Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi are listed for the left wing-back role. Abdullahi Bewene, who debuted against Poland, is in contention to start.

The two nations last met at senior level on 17 November 2022, when Portugal won 4-0 in a friendly at Lisbon’s Estádio José Alvalade, according to match records. Portugal’s U20 team also defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the final of the 1989 FIFA U20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
