The road to 2027 in Imo East Senatorial District, otherwise known as Owerri Zone, has begun with an unusual clarity. For the first time in a long while, the people of Owerri Zone are not merely waiting to choose among the usual recycled names. They are witnessing the emergence of a candidate whose presence has fundamentally altered the political conversation. That candidate is Mazi Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi, the consensus candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) for Imo East.
From Ngor Okpala, a local government that has never produced a Senator since 1999, Amadi’s candidacy carries both historical weight and generational hope. A technocrat, philanthropist, and strategist with a national network and a deep grassroots footprint, he has insisted that the contest must be decided on ideas, character, competence and capacity to deliver. It is precisely because he has raised the bar that the old political playbook has returned with venom: a coordinated campaign of calumny and unfounded blackmail.
This dangerous resort to falsehood must be interrogated for what it truly is, and for what it portends for Owerri Zone.
First, calumny is a poison to democracy itself.
Democracy thrives when voters are presented with competing ideas and credible records. It dies when the public square is flooded with lies. The recent flood of faceless write-ups, cloned social media accounts, and procured voices accusing Dr. Amadi of every imaginable crime without a shred of evidence is not opposition politics; it is anti democratic sabotage. When you cannot fault a man’s record, you invent one for him. When you cannot match his capacity, you attempt to destroy his character. This does not only hurt Dr. Amadi; it insults the intelligence of the Owerri electorate. Our people are too sophisticated to be herded by blackmail.
The architects of this smear forget that Owerri Zone has suffered enough from leadership recruited through propaganda rather than proven competence. For years we have elected men who were marketed to us with lies, only for them to disappear after inauguration. To repeat that tragic cycle against a candidate who has chosen to subject himself to issue-based scrutiny is to condemn the zone to perpetual under-representation.
Second, campaign of calumny distracts from the real issues.
Owerri Zone today is confronted with existential questions. Insecurity has crippled our rural economies. Our youths are migrating in droves. Our federal representation has been largely ceremonial, lacking in bills, motions, and tangible federal presence. What the zone needs is a Senator who can articulate a legislative agenda, attract federal infrastructure, and unify nine diverse local governments into a single negotiating bloc in the National Assembly.
Dr.Chima Matthew Amadi has dared his rivals to come to the village squares and defend their records. He has challenged women, youths, and stakeholders to demand accountability. In response, his detractors have offered no alternative manifesto, no superior idea. They have offered only blackmail: whispered threats to business associates, extortionist demands for money to stop negative publications, and phantom petitions. This is not politics; it is a criminal enterprise masquerading as politics. It drags public discourse into the gutter and leaves the real problems of Owerri untouched.
Third, it fractures the unity of Owerri Zone.
The most insidious danger of this campaign of calumny is that it is deliberately designed to pit communities against each other. By targeting Dr.Chima Matthew Amadi because he is from Ngor Okpala, a historically marginalized bloc in the senatorial equation, the purveyors of hate are sending a message that some parts of Owerri are not entitled to aspire. If Ngor Okpala cannot aspire in 2027, who will be told tomorrow that Mbaitoli cannot aspire, or that Owerri West is too ambitious?
Owerri Zonal Equity Movement (OZEM) and other pan-Owerri groups have correctly argued that the zone must be strategic and inclusive. Equity is not a favour; it is the foundation of stability. To use blackmail to extinguish the legitimate aspiration of Ngor Okpala is to plant the seeds of future discord that will haunt us long after the 2027 elections.
Fourth, it discourages credible people from public service.
Perhaps the greatest long-term damage is this: when a man like Dr Chima Amadi, who built a reputable career outside politics, who has empowered hundreds of young people without holding public office, and who could comfortably remain in the private sector, decides to enter the arena and is immediately met with unfounded blackmail, what message are we sending to other competent sons and daughters of Owerri? That politics is reserved for those who have nothing to lose. That integrity is a liability.
If we allow blackmailers to set the entrance fee for public office, Owerri Zone will be left only with those who have no reputation to protect. And we will all be worse for it.
The time has come to draw a line. The security agencies must take note of those who use political criticism as a cover for criminal extortion. The media must refuse to be a laundering machine for falsehood. And the political class in Owerri Zone must insist on decorum.
Mazi Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi has said he is ready for a battle of ideas. Let his rivals bring their ideas to the table. Let them show us their scorecards. Let them tell Owerri what they did with yesterday’s opportunity and what they intend to do with tomorrow’s mandate.
Owerri Zone cannot afford to gamble at this critical time. We must reject calumny, repudiate blackmail, and protect the right of every qualified son and daughter of the zone to contest freely without being subjected to mob lynching by liars.
The future of Imo East will not be decided by who blackmails loudest, but by who offers the clearest path to purposeful representation.
