The Police at Idimu Division in Lagos State are yet to decide what to do with a pick-up van loaded with drinks abandoned at Council Bus Stop in Idimu.
The vehicle, which was recovered by the Police about four months ago, has remained unclaimed at the station despite efforts to trace the owner.
Residents said the pick-up was found parked at Council Bus Stop for several days without anyone coming to move it, a development that raised suspicion in the area.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Police at Idimu Division, who towed the vehicle to the station for safekeeping.
What has surprised residents and the Police is that the owner of the vehicle has yet to come forward to reclaim the pick-up and the drinks inside, despite public information to that effect.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the news of the recovered vehicle spread within the community, but no one has shown up to claim ownership.
“We were surprised when the Police announced that the owner should come with proof of ownership, but up till now nobody has come,” the resident said.
Another resident said the situation has become a topic of discussion in the area, with many wondering why the owner abandoned the vehicle and goods.
Police sources at the division said the vehicle and its contents have remained intact since it was brought to the station.
According to the sources, the Police have refused to tamper with the drinks inside the pick-up in order to preserve due process and maintain professionalism.
“We recovered the vehicle with drinks inside about four months ago at Council Bus Stop. Since then, we have been waiting for the owner to come with valid documents, but nobody has come,” a police source said.
The source added that the Police are considering the next line of action in line with the law, as the vehicle continues to occupy space at the station.
It was gathered that the Police may seek legal guidance on how to handle unclaimed recovered items if the owner fails to show up after the stipulated period.
Residents commended the Police for transparency in handling the matter, noting that the drinks have remained untouched.
They urged anyone with useful information about the owner to assist the Police.
Efforts to speak with the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Waheed Adebisi, proved abortive as he was said to have gone for routine monitoring in the area.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get an official reaction from the Lagos State Police Command were ongoing.
