The flag-off of the reconstruction of Uratta Road and Old Express Road in Aba on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, marks another decisive step in Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s commitment to rebuilding Aba and restoring its position as a major commercial and industrial hub in the South East. The two projects, covering approximately 7.09 kilometres, demonstrate that the transformation of Abia State is driven not by political rhetoric but by deliberate investments in infrastructure and economic recovery. With funding secured and a delivery timeline of 24 months or less, Governor Otti has renewed the confidence of residents and business owners that the era of prolonged neglect is giving way to purposeful and results driven governance.
For more than two decades, the deplorable condition of major roads in Aba imposed enormous costs on residents, traders, manufacturers and investors. Businesses relocated, commercial activities suffered, jobs were lost and the city’s economic reputation declined. Governor Otti’s ongoing road reconstruction programme is therefore more than an infrastructure initiative. It is a strategic economic recovery effort aimed at restoring livelihoods, attracting investment, improving connectivity and reconnecting communities to opportunities. The reconstruction of Uratta and Old Express Roads, following interventions on Port Harcourt, Ohanku, Obohia and other strategic roads, reinforces the Governor’s determination to confront longstanding challenges and restore Aba’s critical road network.
More significantly, the Otti administration’s commitment to Aba reflects a broader development vision that extends across Ukwa La Ngwa and every other part of Abia State. The people of Ukwa La Ngwa, particularly those living and doing business in Aba and its surrounding communities, have endured years of infrastructural decay and unmet expectations. The ongoing interventions demonstrate that their concerns are receiving attention within the wider transformation agenda. This is a clear indication that the New Abia project recognises the importance of Aba and its surrounding communities to the economic prosperity of the state and is determined to address their developmental needs.

Governor Otti understands that rebuilding Aba requires more than rehabilitating major commercial corridors. It also demands functional internal roads, effective drainage, street lighting, improved transportation and better access to schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services. These complementary investments are critical to making the city safer, more accessible and more attractive to businesses and investors. By addressing Aba’s infrastructure challenges, the administration is laying the foundation for stronger commercial activity, job creation and improved living standards across the city and its surrounding communities.
At the heart of this development philosophy is Governor Otti’s commitment to equity and fairness in the distribution of public amenities. The New Abia agenda is designed to serve every community, irrespective of senatorial district, local government area, political affiliation or social standing. Equitable development does not necessarily mean executing identical projects everywhere. Rather, it requires the government to respond fairly to the distinct needs of different communities, prioritise neglected areas and ensure that no part of the state is permanently excluded from the benefits of governance. The infrastructure investments in Aba and other parts of Abia reflect this commitment to balanced, inclusive and people centred development.
Through strategic partnerships with the African Development Bank and other development partners under the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development programme (ABSIID), the Otti administration is also mobilising resources and expertise to deliver infrastructure capable of generating lasting economic and social benefits. These partnerships reinforce the administration’s determination to pursue development through strategic planning, responsible resource mobilisation and projects designed to meet the long term needs of the people. The objective is not merely to construct roads, but to create the infrastructure required to support commerce, stimulate investment and strengthen Abia’s economic competitiveness.

Ultimately, the bond between Governor Otti and Aba is being strengthened by visible interventions, credible commitments and a determination to deliver results. His assurance that the resources required for the Uratta and Old Express Road projects have been secured, together with the deployment of contractors and equipment, re-echoes the distinction between political promises and demonstrable performance. As the reconstruction progresses, the administration is determined to sustain its focus on quality, timely delivery and meaningful engagement with affected residents and businesses. For Aba, Ukwa La Ngwa and the wider Abia community, the New Abia transformation must be inclusive, measurable and enduring. Governor Otti’s responsibility is not merely to rebuild roads, but to restore public confidence, revive economic prosperity and establish a lasting development legacy in which every part of Abia State has a fair opportunity to progress.
