The Orashi National Congress, ONC, has welcomed the announcement by Aradel Holdings Plc to commence petrol production at its modular refinery in Rivers State by 2027, describing it as a commendable step for Nigeria’s energy sector and host communities in the Niger Delta.
In a statement signed by the President General, Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe, JP, AP, the ONC said the move reflects the growing capacity of indigenous companies to thrive in a deregulated downstream sector.
“For years, the removal of fuel subsidy and deregulation of the downstream sector remained a major policy shift. Aradel’s decision to invest in petrol refining shows that local content and indigenous capacity can now thrive in a deregulated market,” the statement read.
The Congress highlighted three key benefits of the planned 11,000-barrel-a-day modular refinery:
1. Local Jobs & Skills: The project is expected to create direct and indirect employment for youths, engineers, and service providers across Orashi and Rivers State.
2. Energy Security: Increasing domestic refining capacity will reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products and help stabilize supply for Nigerians.
3. Community Development: As an indigenous company operating in the region, the ONC said it expects Aradel to deepen engagement with host communities through education, infrastructure, and environmental stewardship.
The ONC also noted Aradel’s consideration of expansion plans and aviation fuel production for export, saying this positions Rivers State and the Niger Delta as key players in Nigeria’s industrial future.
The group called on the Federal Government, NNPCL, NMDPRA, and other stakeholders to continue providing an enabling environment for indigenous refiners to grow.
It further urged Aradel Holdings to prioritize host community partnerships, local content, and sustainable operations as the project advances.
“The Orashi National Congress remains committed to supporting investments that bring prosperity, peace, and development to Orashi land and the Niger Delta at large,” Amb. Ibe stated.
