The Orashi National Congress, ONC, has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Chief (Ambassador) Patrick Dele Cole, describing him as a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician and public servant.
In a statement signed on October 17, 2026, by its President General, Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe, JP, AP, the ONC said Ambassador Cole, who died at 86, devoted his entire life to national service, bringing distinction, honour and intellectual depth to every assignment in diplomacy, journalism and politics.
“His career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation. From the newsroom to the diplomatic table, he demonstrated that principled engagement remains the most powerful tool for nation-building,” Ibe said.
He noted that Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape were particularly historic, adding that as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Times of Nigeria, at a time when the paper was the conscience of the nation, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power and strengthening democratic governance.
“At 86, Ambassador Dele Cole witnessed defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed meaningfully to national development through his work in the media, diplomacy and public service. His life stands as a testament to the value of experience, integrity and unwavering commitment to the public good,” the ONC President General stated.
Ibe extended condolences to his son, Rt. Hon. Tonye Cole, the entire Cole family, the people of Abonnema in Kalabari Kingdom where he was a High Chief, PANDEF, the Ijaw Nation, and all whose lives he touched.
“May Almighty God grant Ambassador Cole eternal rest and give his family and all who mourn him the fortitude to bear this profound and irreplaceable loss. Adieu, Chief PDC,” he said.
