As part of efforts to ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for residents, Ikeja Local Government, under the leadership of the Executive Chairman, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), conducted its July 2026 Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
The exercise covered the public spaces within the council area, including Computer Village road, Ikeja Under Bridge, Ashade Market, Ipodo Market, Olowu Junction, and Oyetubo Street. The exercise also featured environmental monitoring, public sensitization, and enforcement activities aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and public health.
A major highlight of the exercise was the intensive cleaning operation carried out at Ashade Retail Market and its environs, where environmental officials, sanitation workers, and management staffs worked collectively to clear refuse, evacuate waste, and restore cleanliness to the area. The exercise was aimed at improving environmental hygiene, enhancing public health, and ensuring a more conducive atmosphere for residents, traders and ensure a healthy attractive environment for all .
Leading the sanitation exercise was the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), accompanied by all the Secretary to the Local Government, Prince Adeyinka Illo; the Council Manager, Mrs. Odubeko Julianna;the chief of Staff, Mr Adeyi Adeniyi, the officials from the ministry of environment and Lagos State Waste disposal Agency and other environmental stakeholders.
The exercise witnessed the active participation of the Leader of the Legislative Arm, Hon. Rasheed Ogunseye; Deputy Leader, Hon. Shakirat Jinadu; Chief Whip, Hon. Idris Salami; Deputy Chief Whip, Hon.Tunde Folami and Hon.Saburi Obadeyi.
Also present were the Special Adviser on Agriculture and Rural Development, Adeyemi Arafat Adewale; Special Adviser on Works, Saibu Ganiyu Oladeji; Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Dauda Odunlami Idowu; Special Adviser on Environment, Oluwaseun Peter Makinde; Special Adviser on ICT, Bankole Olanrewaju Rasheed; Special Adviser on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Olajumoke Fatimoh Ogunyemi; Supervisor for Agriculture and Rural Development, Omotayo Matthew Aderinola; Supervisor for Budget and Planning, Aderowo Oluwasegun Abiodun; Supervisor for WAPA, Oluwafunmibi Febisola Akinduro; Supervisor for Special Duties, Dada John Adams; Supervisor for Tourism and Hospitality, Paulina Adeshola Adeniyi-Ediagbonya;hon Mathew Ojuwunmi;hon Gbenga Ajayi, Hon. Shade, Hon Olaitan, Hon Nono; Hon Babatunde Shittu and Supervisor for Youth Development and Sports, Ayotunde Adetunji Adenuga.
Also in attendance were the director and H.O.D environmental services Sanitarian Omotayo Olatunde,the internal auditors, Mr Folahan Alao,H.O.D education and Library services;Mr. Ogundele Babatunde; Head of Information Unit, Mrs. Dosunmu Kofoworola; Head of ICT, Mrs.Khadijah Kazzim; Head of Tourism, Mrs. Awolusi Temitope; and the area officers, Mr. Ojikutu, Mrs Adetola and Mrs Afolabi.
Community participation was further strengthened by the presence of the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman, Alhaja Adefolami; CDC Secretary, Hon. Oshiberu Olugbega; the Women Leader, Mrs. Arubo; market stakeholders; and other community representatives.
Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Chairman, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), reiterated the importance of environmental sanitation as a collective responsibility. He urged residents, traders, and business owners to maintain clean surroundings, ensure proper waste disposal, and comply with environmental regulations in order to create a healthier and more habitable Ikeja for all.
The Chairman further emphasized that environmental cleanliness remains a key priority of his administration and called on residents to sustain the culture of cleanliness beyond the monthly sanitation exercise. He noted that a clean environment contributes significantly to public health, safety, and the overall development of the community.
The exercise concluded successfully with inspections of strategic locations, environmental sensitization of residents and traders, and the evacuation of waste from designated areas within the local government.
