Francis Cardinal Arinze Marks 60 Years Of Episcopal Ministry

On this day, August 29, 1965, a 32-year-old priest named Francis Arinze was consecrated bishop, making history as the youngest Catholic Bishop in the world at that time. His consecration came just in time for him to participate in the concluding session of the Second Vatican Council in Rome (1962–1965), a council that reshaped the life of the Church globally.

Barely two years later, at only 34, he was entrusted with even greater responsibility as Archbishop of Onitsha. With that appointment, he not only became the youngest Archbishop but also the very first African to shepherd the historic Archdiocese of Onitsha, one of the country’s most ancient and influential Catholic Sees.
Reaching six decades as a bishop is a grace that very few in the Church ever live to witness.
Today, we celebrate this remarkable milestone with deep gratitude to God for the life and ministry of His Eminence, Francis Cardinal Arinze, CFR.
May the Lord continue to sustain him in vigour and grace.
