Notable Niger Delta socio-cultural group, the Orashi National Congress, (ONC), has welcomed the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, led by Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, to the Orashi region as the state intensifies efforts to provide relief to communities affected by the 2026 flooding.
The committee’s intervention in Ahoada East and Abua/Odual Local Government Areas forms part of the Rivers State Government’s ongoing distribution of relief materials to flood-affected communities across the state.The state government has said the exercise is aimed at cushioning the hardship caused by the disaster.
In a statement issued on behalf of the people of Orashi, ONC President General, Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe JP AP, described the visit as timely, particularly for communities where flooding has displaced residents, submerged farmlands and disrupted livelihoods.
The ONC commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu for the intervention and pledged its cooperation with the committee to ensure that relief materials reach genuine flood victims at the grassroots.
The organisation, however, called for the inclusion of other heavily affected communities in Ahoada West and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs in subsequent phases of the intervention.
The appeal comes as the Rivers State Government continues its wider flood response programme, including collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and efforts to ensure that relief reaches affected residents.
The ONC wished the committee a successful humanitarian mission and urged continued assessment of affected communities across the Orashi region.
