Cleaner Communities & Healthier Lives In Ikeja: Comrade Dauda Intensifies Environmental Sanitation Drive

In a renewed effort to promote a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment, the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, led the weekly environmental sanitation exercise across strategic locations within the council area.

The exercise commenced at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat and proceeded along Obafemi Awolowo Way, where the Chairman supervised the clearing of overgrown vegetation and weeds on road medians, drainage cover slabs and adjoining public spaces. The exercise, carried out by officials of the Environmental Department, was aimed at restoring the aesthetic appeal of the area, improving visibility for motorists and pedestrians, and ensuring the free flow of stormwater through drainage channels.

The team later visited Oritshe Street, Ikeja, where the Chairman responded to complaints over offensive odour emanating from a drainage system within a residential compound. Addressing the occupants, Comrade Dauda stressed the importance of proper environmental sanitation and urged them to immediately clear and maintain their drainage facilities to eliminate the unpleasant condition and safeguard public health.

Continuing the exercise, the Chairman inspected a parcel of land situated at Olayinka bamgbose street linking Ezekiel Street, which has been occupied by illegal settlers. Expressing concern over the unsanitary condition of the site, he directed the occupants to clean up the environment and maintain proper hygiene, noting that every resident has a responsibility to keep Ikeja clean and habitable.

The environmental sanitation exercise concluded at Victory Home School, where the Chairman observed extensive overgrown vegetation within the school premises. He directed the school management to clear the weeds and overgrowth within one week to provide a cleaner, safer and more conducive learning environment for pupils and staff.

Comrade Dauda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability, emphasizing that routine sanitation exercises and community participation remain vital to preventing environmental hazards, promoting public health and preserving the beauty of Ikeja.
