The National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, Amb. Godknows Boladei Igali, OON, the Ibetariowei of Izon land, on Friday joined other dignitaries at a public lecture held in commemoration of the 10th remembrance anniversary of the late Chief Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha, PhD, JP, the first Executive Governor of Bayelsa State.

Fondly remembered as the “Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation,” Alamieyeseigha was celebrated for his role in championing federalism, resource control and environmental justice for the Niger Delta people.

This year’s legacy lecture was themed “In the Niger Delta Voice, Through Nigeria’s Soul: Federalism, Resource Control, and the Contemporary Nigerian State in the DSP Alamieyeseigha Legacies.”

The commemorative event, organised by the Alamieyeseigha Foundation in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Government, was held at the Chief DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, near Government House, Yenagoa. It attracted political leaders, academics, traditional rulers, civil society representatives and members of the Ijaw nation who gathered to reflect on the late governor’s enduring legacy.

Speakers at the event emphasised Alamieyeseigha’s pivotal role in the struggle for resource control and true federalism, noting that his contributions remain relevant to contemporary debates on Nigeria’s political structure.

The memorial lecture forms part of a series of activities marking a decade since the passing of Chief Alamieyeseigha, whose legacy continues to resonate across the Niger Delta and beyond.
