A humanitarian per excellence, registered nurse, and faith leader, Kelechi Benwosely, has finally answered the clarion call as she formally showed interest to seek elective position as the member to represent ndi Okigwe North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, assuring them of effective, compassionate, and people- centred representation.
Benwosely, who hails from Umunkwo-Umuihe Umuadi of Isiala Mbano, Okigwe North Local Government Area of Imo State, made this known during an interview session with the Publisher of 4th Estate Reporters, in which she outlined her motivation, background, and vision for the constituency.
According to her, Okigwe North is at a critical point where representation must go beyond routine legislative presence to deliberate, grassroots-focused governance that directly impacts the lives of the people.
“I love my people and want to sincerely serve them the way Christ did,” she said, adding that leadership must be anchored on service, compassion, and responsibility.
Benwosely noted that her journey into public service did not begin with politics but with years of humanitarian and community-based interventions. She cited the installation of solar street lights in Isiala Mbano as one of several initiatives she personally supported to enhance community safety and development.
She also highlighted road interventions, school renovations, water projects, food distribution, and empowerment programmes for women and youths across different communities.
Explaining the rationale behind the solar street light project, she said the intervention was aimed at improving security and quality of life in the community.
“When there is light, crime reduces. People feel safer, and communities function better,” she said.
She stressed that while individuals can make meaningful contributions, the scale of developmental challenges facing Okigwe North requires access to government structures and legislative authority.
“You can only do so much as an individual,” she explained. “To truly serve the people on a larger scale, you need a platform.”
Benwosely currently serves as National Coordinator of Women on Mission for Peace and Humanity, an organisation dedicated to empowering women, youths, widows, and orphans through skill acquisition, education support, and economic empowerment programmes across Imo State, Nigeria, and parts of Africa.
She explained that the organisation’s focus on women is rooted in sustainability and long-term impact.
“If you empower one woman, you empower a whole nation,” she said, noting that empowering mothers strengthens families and communities.
She disclosed that the organisation shifted its strategy from child-only interventions to women-centered empowerment after observing that empowering mothers produces lasting benefits for families and society.
A pastor of Cell City International, Benwosely said her faith has significantly shaped her leadership philosophy, emphasising morality, accountability, and service to humanity.
“Pastoring has made me selfless,” she said. “It teaches you to shepherd people, guide them, and care for everyone, the young, the old, the strong, and the vulnerable.”
She also disclosed that she is a registered nurse, describing healthcare as one of her core passions. According to her, she intends to advocate for improved healthcare delivery, preventive health programmes, and accessible medical services for the people of Okigwe North.
“Health is very close to my heart,” she said. “I want to see a system where our people can access healthcare without hardship.”
Benwosely commended Honourable Miriam, the current representative of Okigwe North, for her service to the constituency, acknowledging the efforts made during her tenure.
However, she maintained that the constituency requires broader engagement, deeper grassroots presence, and renewed energy in representation going forward.
She explained that her decision to contest was largely influenced by calls from community members who, having witnessed her humanitarian efforts over the years, encouraged her to seek public office.
“I wasn’t the one pushing myself,” she said. “The people called on me, and I told them, ‘Here I am. Send me.’”
With her declaration of interest, political observers say Benwosely’s entry into the race introduces a well accepted aspirant, whose profile blends faith leadership, healthcare advocacy, women and youth empowerment, and grassroots development, factors expected to shape the unfolding contest for Okigwe North Federal Constituency.
