Security officials have reportedly apprehended several thugs allegedly linked to a popular political figure in Onitsha North 1 Constituency, ahead of the scheduled by-election on Saturday, 16th August, 2025.
However, there is no specific information available about the politician’s identity or the exact nature of the allegations.
The Anambra State Police Command has announced restrictions on movement from 6 am to 6 pm on Saturday in areas where the bye-elections will take place, including Onitsha North Constituency 1. This move aims to deter criminal activities, reduce the risk of electoral violence, and ensure the safety of voters, electoral officials, and security personnel.
The Police command has also barred vigilante operatives and other quasi-security outfits from participating in the election period, emphasizing that only duly accredited security personnel will be permitted to engage in election duties.
It’s worth noting that the Anambra State Joint Enforcement Team, also known as “Ocha Brigade,” has previously arrested individuals terrorizing Onitsha and its environs, including those using army camouflage uniforms to extort money from motorists and innocent citizens.
