The Power Of A Personal Example: Meekness Is Not Weakness

DR. SEGUN ‘TREMENDOUS’ OSHINAGA

“Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.”
Zephaniah 2:3
Being a believer makes us different from the regular mill of humanity. We dance to a radically different beat and answer to a higher call in values and morals. Our behaviour and practices are modelled after the order of the Kingdom. Often, our culture is diametrically opposed to the culture of the world.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”
Isaiah 55:8
Meekness is the WAY of the Lord, not of the world. It is the culture of the world to be proud and to think highly of oneself. Self-assertiveness, unreasoning arrogance, roughly walking over others, suffocating selfishness and ‘a survival of the fittest’ mentality is the culture of the world.
Meekness is the opposite of being out of control. It is not weakness, but supreme self-control empowered by the spirit. We are gentle giants and not thoughtless bullies looking for opportunities to show and display our power and authority.
Jerry Bridges tells us: “Both gentleness and meekness are born of power, not weakness. There is a pseudo-gentleness that is effeminate, and there is a pseudo-meekness that is cowardly. But a Christian is to be gentle and meek because those are Godlike virtues. We should never be afraid, therefore, that the gentleness of the Spirit means weakness of character. It takes strength, God’s strength, to be truly gentle.”
Meekness also means humility. It is only the humble heart which is also meek, and which, as such, does not fight against God and more or less struggle and contend with Him.  This meekness however, being first of all a meekness before God, is also such in the face of men, even of evil men, out of a sense that these, with the insults and injuries which they may inflict, are permitted and employed by Him for the chastening and purifying of His elect.
“Christ is the humility of God embodied in human nature; the Eternal Love humbling itself, clothing itself in the garb of meekness and gentleness, to win and serve and save us.”
Andrew Murray
“Submitting to One Another in the Fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:21
Meekness also means submissiveness. We are to submit to God and one another.
