The Southern Youth Foundation of Nigeria, SYF, has officially announced the postponement of its planned peaceful protest against the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) over alleged marginalisation of indigenes from certain states, particularly Bayelsa and Rivers.
This decision follows a crucial meeting held between the leadership of the youth body and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), where national security concerns and the current fragile peace in Rivers State were extensively discussed.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the National President of SYF, Amb. Comr. Emeni Ibe (JP, AP), revealed that the DSS appealed to the group to reconsider the timing of the protest in light of the state’s present security and political atmosphere. The security agency assured the youths that steps were already being taken to engage with the leadership of the NDDC and address the pressing concerns raised by the foundation.
“In the spirit of peace and for the greater good of Rivers State and the Niger Delta at large, we have decided to suspend our planned protest scheduled for next week. This decision was reached after a frank and constructive engagement with the DSS, who urged us to give room for dialogue and ongoing intervention efforts,” Amb. Ibe said.
He emphasized that while the Southern Youth Foundation remains firm in its position on justice, equity, and fair representation within the NDDC, the organization will always prioritize peace and constructive dialogue over unrest.
“We are peaceful, responsible young people committed to the advancement of our region. Our message has been heard, and we will give the authorities time to act. However, we remain watchful and will not hesitate to resume civil actions if positive steps are not taken within a reasonable time,” he added.
The SYF leadership further called on the NDDC and relevant stakeholders to swiftly engage in sincere dialogue to address the growing frustration of marginalized communities and youths in the Niger Delta.
The postponement is seen as a strategic and patriotic move to support the ongoing peace process in Rivers State, following recent tensions in the region.
