Senator Tokunbo Abiru: Celebrating A Legacy Of Visionary Leadership

It is another remarkable day for an exceptional leader, a visionary public servant, *Distinguished Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA*, the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions.

 

Fondly known as the “DoingGood Senator,” Tokunbo Abiru, whose life has become synonymous with purposeful impact, stands out as a leader driven by an uncommon passion for people-centered development. His journey from a stellar banking career that culminated in his role as Managing Director of Polaris Bank, to his current position in the National Assembly, reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence, discipline, and service.

 

In just a few years as a legislator, Senator Abiru has redefined representation in Lagos East. His approach to governance is deliberate, strategic, and deeply rooted in the needs of the people. This people-first strategy laid the foundation for targeted interventions that continue to transform lives.

 

On the legislative front, Senator Abiru has distinguished himself through impactful contributions and forward-looking bills. From the Copyright Bill to the Franchise Regulation Bill, Nigerian Insurance Reforms Act, as well as key amendments to the CBN and NDIC Acts, his legislative footprint is geared towards strengthening Nigeria’s economic framework and unlocking opportunities for entrepreneurs, creatives, and businesses.

 

Beyond the chamber, his commitment to social welfare has been profound. In response to the economic strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, he introduced a financial support scheme that provided monthly stipends to over 2,500 vulnerable constituents for nearly two years.

 

This intervention brought relief to widows, the elderly, unemployed youth, persons with disabilities, and women. He has continued to support families across the district with food packs, particularly during festive seasons. Over 80,000 households have been impacted through Senator Tokunbo Abiru food packs distribution programme.

 

Accessibility and responsiveness have also defined his leadership.With liaison offices strategically located in Ikorodu, Epe, Kosofe, Ibeju-Lekki, and Somolu, Senator Abiru has ensured that governance remains close to the people.

 

His investments in education and infrastructure speak volumes. From facilitating classroom construction and provision of learning materials to bursaries for indigent students, he has demonstrated a clear commitment to human capital development. Infrastructure projects, ranging from healthcare facilities and road construction to solar-powered street lighting and community enhancements, have significantly improved the quality of life across Lagos East.

 

In driving economic empowerment, Senator Abiru launched a ₦300 million constituency intervention revolving loan scheme, offering single-digit interest rates to MSMEs, artisans, and traders and also launched 48 cooperatives with N480m grants, and also empowered over 2,000 constituents with various empowerment tools. The well-thought-out initiatives have provided a lifeline for small businesses and stimulated grassroots economic growth across Lagos East Senatorial district.

 

One of his most transformative legacies is the SAIL Innovation Lab, jointly owned with his wife, Mrs. Surat Feyisola Abiru. The initiative has equipped hundreds of young people with cutting-edge digital and innovation skills, opening doors to global opportunities.

 

Senator Abiru’s integrity, humility, and results-driven leadership have earned him widespread respect, not just among his constituents but also among his peers, who elected him as Chairman of the Southern Senators’ Forum, a recognition of his leadership and credibility.
