On June 21, 2025, at the Save The Girl Child Programme in Nnobi, Anambra State, Dr. Thelma Ezeonu, the wife of Ikemba Nnobi, was honoured with the prestigious “Exceptional Mother Award” by the Seraphine Outreach/Office of the Girl Child Ambassador. The award was presented in recognition of her outstanding support and commitment to empowering women and the girl child.

The award, which was received on her behalf by Hon. Lady Ify Nnekwelugo, the Nnobi Community Women Leader, read: “Thank you for being a Role Model for the Girl Child.”

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Ezeonu expressed her gratitude to the convener, Amb. Dr. Chioma Nwosu, and the organizers of the programme. She noted that the award would inspire her to continue to do more for women and the girl child.

In a powerful address to the students of Nnobi Community, Dr. Ezeonu admonished the girl child to reshape their minds from the “Nwunye Odogwu Syndrome,” which she described as a serious pandemic that is eating deep into the fabric of young girls in the nation.

She emphasized that “Odogwu is not gender selective” and that it is not part of the Igbo culture. She urged the girls to understand that their destiny is in their hands and that they need to learn at least one skill to earn a living, as education alone is not enough.

Dr. Ezeonu also cautioned the girls against indecent dressing and advised them not to outshine or disrespect their husbands. She encouraged mothers to rise to their roles and duties, warning that some mothers often see the red flag coming but remain silent.

The Exceptional Mother Award winner emphasized the importance of converting skills into earning money, citing examples of female professionals such as software engineers, pilots, and accountants. She also made it clear that marrying a rich man is not a do-or-die affair, but rather a symbol of honour.

The Save The Girl Child Programme, organized in collaboration with the Nnobi Students Association, aims to empower and inspire the girl child to reach their full potential. Dr. Ezeonu’s inspiring words will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the young girls, encouraging them to become confident, skilled, and decent individuals who will shape the future of their community.
