Orashi National Congress Calls For Urgent Action Against Flooding 

The Orashi National Congress (ONC) has issued a passionate call for immediate and concerted action to address the severe flooding as a result of rain, especially in vulnerable areas like the Orashi region of Rivers State.

In a press release signed by Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe (JP, AP), President General of the ONC, the organization expressed deep concern over the recent serious rain with high-risk devastating floods in some part of Orashi region, where farmlands were highly affected

Highlighting the Orashi region’s unique geographical challenges—being situated along Nigeria’s coastal belt—the ONC warned that communities within the area are often among the hardest hit during every flooding seasons. The Congress noted that the cycle of destruction and displacement has become an annual ordeal for residents, with significant losses in lives, property, and livelihood.

 

“It is no longer news that our areas are usually and heavily impacted in every flooding season. We are very concerned that the prediction by NiMET have come to stay this July and call on all levels of government to urgently develop and implement strategies to reduce the impact and forestall human and material losses,” the ONC stated.

To mitigate the impending disaster, the ONC is urging the Federal, State, and Local Government authorities to immediately initiate a wide-scale enlightenment and sensitization campaign.

According to the Congress, such programmes are essential to educate the populace on safety measures, evacuation plans, and early response tactics that could save lives and reduce economic damage.

 

Additionally, the ONC is calling on community leaders, youth organizations, and Community Development Committees (CDCs) across the Orashi region to begin proactive preparations. These include identifying higher grounds for temporary relocation, setting up emergency response units, and coordinating resources as a result of these serous rain that causes flood on our farmlands and communities.

“Now is the time to act,” emphasized Amb. Comrade Emeni Ibe.

“We cannot afford to wait any further floodwaters have arrive. We must move our people to safer grounds before it is too late.”

 

The ONC reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies, NGOs, and traditional institutions to ensure that the Orashi region is adequately prepared for this rain flood season. It concluded by urging all residents to take this information seriously and prioritize safety in these days
