What if Nigerian workers at all levels were paid living wages, and at least 70 percent of our population were educated and enlightened? I doubt tax evasion would be a major issue. With more money circulating, business owners and service providers would thrive, government revenue would increase significantly, and the economy would be rebuilt from the ground up.
The real issue is leadership. Why does governance in this part of the world seem so complex? Why do we keep producing leaders who lack courage, vision, and the capacity to think creatively? Leaders who fail to invest our limited resources in improving basic amenities, or to design effective policies that reduce our dependence on foreign systems for healthcare, education, and other essential services.
Why is good governance so difficult to achieve, and why do our leaders appear to profit more from the ignorance of the people than from their empowerment?
Why can’t the North adopt a progressive model of Islam similar to Saudi Arabia, while the South strengthens its productive ties with Western Europe and America? Where is the missing link?
Seeing the suffering of people in this part of the world while they continue to call on and hope in God, when they should be holding their leaders accountable, frightens me. It is high time we stopped the misleading narrative that God gives power and makes leaders. That idea is a hoax, one of the most insensitive and ridiculous statements I have ever had to contend with.
Why would this so-called God despise His own people so much as to hand them over to lunatics and cowards as leaders?
