The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), on Thursday attended the official book launch of The Gun Hegemony, authored by renowned pro-democracy activist and intellectual, Mr. Ayo Opadokun.
The high-profile event was held at the Agip Recital Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, and attracted eminent statesmen, political leaders, scholars, and stakeholders from across the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was the Special Guest of Honour at the event and was ably represented by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

The book launch also witnessed the presence of distinguished personalities including former Governors Chief Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, elder statesman Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and several other notable leaders from Nigeria’s political and intellectual space.

The Gun Hegemony is a thought-provoking work that chronicles Nigeria’s political journey, with a particular focus on military dominance in governance, the struggle for democracy, and the role of civil resistance in shaping the nation’s democratic evolution.

The author, Ayo Opadokun, drawing from his vast experience as a pro-democracy advocate and political organiser, offers deep insights into Nigeria’s past while challenging citizens and leaders to safeguard democratic values.

Speaking at the event, the Ikeja Council Chairman, Comrade Dauda, commended the author for his courage, consistency, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. He described The Gun Hegemony as a timely and important contribution to Nigeria’s political literature, noting that it serves as both a historical record and a guide for younger generations on the cost and value of democracy.
According to him, the book reinforces the need for continuous civic engagement, responsible leadership, and the protection of democratic institutions.
Comrade Dauda further emphasized that the lessons from the book align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and ensuring that the sacrifices of past heroes of democracy are not forgotten. He encouraged public office holders, students, and political actors to read the book and draw lessons that will help deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture.
The colourful event featured a well-attended audience, a formal unveiling of the book, and rich intellectual discourse, underscoring the significance of the occasion and the enduring relevance of Ayo Opadokun’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic history.
